BUCK STOVE AND POOL PRESENTS

"APPALACHIAN STOVE CATALYTIC COMBUSTORS FOR ALL MODEL APPALACHIAN STOVES.

Why should I change or replace my catalyst?
The catalyst (when it is working properly) increases the efficency of the stoves by 10 percent or more. Big deal you say I get my wood for free so I don't care. Well that is the reason the federal government mandated the efficency standards for new stove, too many people didn't care and our air quality suffered. Stagnet air along with the wood smoke makes it hard for people with breathing problems. So if you don't even care about the increased efficiency of the stove, do it for that poor guy or gal that is gasping for a breath of fresh air.

How do I order the proper catalyst for my stove? If you know the model number it is simple, if you don't it is not that difficult, but best done in the off season.

The catalyst must be removed from the stove and measured, if it is still in one peice, if not the dimensions can be determined from the housing it was in. There will be a little room for expansion of the gasket wrap that goes around the catalyst inside the housing. The gasket swells when it gets hot and fills a small gap left between the cat and the housing. It would be good to mention the gasket when ordering the catalyst.

How do I maintain the combustor's operating condition?
During the startup of a cold stove, a medium to high firing rate must be maintained for 20 to 30 minutes to insure that the stove, combustor and fuel are all stabilized at proper operating temperatures.
Even though it's possible to have gas temperatures reach 600° F. (320° C.) within two or three minutes after a fire is started, if the fire is turned down immediately to low-fire conditions, it will result in either the fire or the combustor going out.
At the end of a burning cycle, it's possible that the amount of burning charcoal might not provide sufficient temperatures or fuel for the catalyst. During the refueling of a hot stove that has an internal firebox temperature below 500° F. (260° C.), it is our recommendation that the stove be fired for about 10 minutes to ensure that the catalyst reaches 600° F. (320° C.). Doing this will ensure sufficient temperatures and proper amounts of volatiles for the catalyst operation.

When refueling a hot stove that has an internal firebox temperature above 500° F. (260° C.), no re-firing step is necessary.
Just open the bypass damper and load your fuel. The bypass damper can be closed immediately, as long as the fuel is free from any form of moisture.

How do I change my catalytic combustor?
The catalyst housing is usually held in place with bolts to the stove top. To make it easier to remove, place a bottle jack with a 2x4 or 2x6 under the housing and pump the jack up tight. Remove the bolts, or nuts that hold the housing in place, remove the handle assembly if possible, and then lower the jack and remove the cat housing. Take a picture of the catalyst in the housing (can be a mental picture if your mental camera is still working) so you will know how it goes when you replace it, and how much gasket material is required.

To replace the catalyst housing, reverse the procedure using the jack to hold it in place while you secure the nuts, or bolts. I know it seems like it is difficult, but after all you only do it once every 7 to 10 years. You can call your local chimney sweep and have him clean the chimney and replace the catalyst at the same time, and not even get your hands dirty.
